J1 Program Eligibility Requirements
The J-1 classification (exchange visitors) is authorized for those who intend to participate in an approved program for the purpose of teaching, instructing or lecturing, studying, observing, conducting research, consulting, demonstrating special skills, receiving training, or to receive graduate medical education or training.
The BridgeUSA Teacher Program is a U.S. government-sponsored exchange program under the J-1 Visa category, designed to bring international teachers to the U.S. to teach in primary and secondary schools for up to three years. The program aims to promote cultural exchange, foster mutual understanding, and enhance educational quality in U.S. schools by introducing foreign educators with diverse teaching methods and perspectives.
Program Purpose

Program Restirction
Duration: Teachers can participate for up to three years, with the possibility of an additional two-year extension. However, they must return to their home country after their program ends and fulfill a two-year home-country physical presence requirement before applying for another J-1 visa or H-1B visa.
Employment Restrictions: Teachers must work only in the position they are sponsored for under the program. They cannot engage in other employment while on the J-1 visa.
Eligibility: Teachers must meet specific qualifications, including a degree in education or a related field, proficiency in English, and prior teaching experience.
Cultural Exchange: Teachers are expected to participate in cultural exchange activities and contribute to the cultural exchange goals of the program.
Limitations on Extensions: Teachers on the J-1 visa may not extend their stay beyond the program’s approved duration, unless there are exceptional circumstances. After the program ends, they must depart the U.S. and comply with the two-year home residency requirement.
Admission Requirements
- Meet the qualifications for teaching in primary or secondary schools in their country of nationality or last legal residence;
- Be working as a teacher in the home country or country of legal residence at the time of application, or, if not working as a teacher, otherwise meet the eligibility qualifications and (a) have recently (within 12 months of application) completed an advanced degree and (b) have two years of full-time teaching experience within the past eight years;
- Have a degree-equivalent to a U.S. bachelor’s degree in either education or the academic subject field in which they intend to teach;
- Have a minimum of two years (24 months) of teaching or related professional experience;
- Satisfy the standards of the U.S. state in which they will teach;
- Be of good reputation and character;
- Be seeking to enter the United States for the purpose of full-time teaching as a teacher of record at a primary (including pre-kindergarten) or secondary accredited educational institution in the United States (pre-kindergarten teachers must teach full-time, and at the pre-kindergarten level, may teach only language immersion at an accredited host school);
- Possess sufficient proficiency in the English language.
Additional Agency Requirements
- Teachers need to have connections to their home country and provide solid evidence that they will return there after completing the program.
- Teachers are required to submit proof of re-employment from their current employer following the program. If this is not available, they must provide a letter of intent from a prospective employer.
- Must provide proof of funds or financial capacity to join the program.

The duration of stay of the participant is 5 years, Initially they will be given a 3-year DS2019 and visa validity, if there is an oppurtuniy you can extend your stay after the 3rd year with 1 year increment. “subject for Sponsors approval”
Some exchange visitors with J-1 visas are subject to a two-year home-country physical presence requirement. It requires the participant to return home for at least two years after their exchange visitor program. This requirement is part of U.S. law, in the Immigration and Nationality Act, Section 212(e).
